BACK FROM VACATION

Just got back from a road trip through the American south-west and found myself right smack dab in the desert, in the middle of a Wile E. Coyote – Roadrunner cartoon. I half expected to see an anvil being tossed off a butte in Monument Valley Arizona. I did see a roadrunner, outside my hotel room. I think it had a Krispy Kreme donut in its mouth.

Thank goodness for rental car companies that offer unlimited mileage. Our trek began in Las Vegas. We drove through Nevada, California, Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico and we put 2300 miles on the car in 9 days. We stopped in Taos, New Mexico where Julia Roberts lives. Locals told us she comes into town for groceries looking incredibly frumpy and she may or may not have showered that day. Or shaved her armpits. Not sure if thats true or not, but doesn’t that story just make you feel like she’s one of us? Except for the armpit part.

My husband and I enjoyed visiting all the big shot Las Vegas hotels like Bellagio and Mirage and Caesar’s Palace, and pretending that we were actually staying in one of them. Our motel was so far away from the ‘strip’, that not too long ago, it had hourly rates. Hmmm. Why would someone need a motel for just one hour? The stores in the big hotels are incredible. The fashions are wildly expensive. I was desperate to buy something, and when I saw the ‘Spiderman’ undershirt at a store in Bellagio – I thought, hey, this should be reasonably priced. It was $180. I had my digital camera with me so I just went from store to store taking pictures of clothes instead.

JR and I are off to Vancouver to see U2 in concert this Thursday with contest winner Belinda Batten and her husband. I have now listened to U2’s ‘How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb’ CD enough times to sing along to all the songs. Hope everyone’s ok with that. We’ll give you a full concert review Friday morning – as Steve Gregory fills in on the morning show. We’ll see how that works out, because usually the day after a concert I have no voice left.

A couple of fantastic fundraisers are coming up this Sunday, and its actually possible to attend both! The ‘Woofs and Wags Walkathon’ for B.A.R.K (Bytown Association for Rescued Kanines) takes place at the Experimental Farm Arboretum at 9 am Sunday morning. Bring the dogs, the kids, there are all kinds of activities and prizes. B.A.R.K rescues unwanted and abused dogs and finds them homes. They are wonderful people and need your support! For info, check B.A.R.K’s website, www.bark-ottawa.com.

Then, on Sunday afternoon, you can enjoy the ‘Celebration of Life Fashion Show’ with proceeds to the Saunders-Matthey Cancer Prevention Coalition. It starts at 1 pm at the Tudor Hall on Bowesville Road. Tickets are just $25.00! For info call Jenny at 592-6164.

We’ll see you after Vancouver!

Bye for now
